Do you remember the day when we would take a valentines card or treat to our neighbors and friends by first placing the Valentine on the door step, ringing the door bell, and then running or hiding? I wonder – do children still do this tradition? Ahh, the 70’s in small town, USA!!!
My inspiration for this blog was a craft I actually made out of red netting and yarn when I was in Elementary School for just that tradition! It’s an inexpensive yet thoughtful gift idea for someone special on Valentine’s Day – your honey, friend, or child.
You might want to try this fun DIY craft! All you need is a bit of burlap, needle, thread, scissors, paper, and a few Valentine day treats, and you are good to go.
Just cut out two same-sized hearts out of burlap, or truthfully, any other netting or fabric you love. As far as the heart size or pattern, I know there are plenty of different heart patterns on line. For mine, I actually just traced a good ol’ fashioned cookie cutter shape and then enlarged it and trimmed it up. These heart pockets are about 6″ wide, which I thought was a perfect size!
You can choose to print these quotes as-is in a jiffy (on a PC, just click on the photos just below, then right-click on the picture, then select “print” from the pop-up menu), or you could write and design your own. What a fun craft to make for your children, or with your children:)

Valentines Quotes for Kids
This is where we need the needle and thread to sew up our heart pocket. I used a silver metallic thread and I doubled it, as you see here. Embroidery floss would work as well. Just hand-sew the heart 2/3 of the way shut.
Next, just cut your love quotes into strips, add a few sugary treats and stuff inside the partially sewn hearts.
Finish by sewing the heart shut and knotting the two ends together! Then do a final trim up on the burlap, as it gets a bit straggly when you are hand sewing the heart. Voila, a thoughtful, original, and inexpensive Valentine gift!
However you celebrate Cupid’s day this year, a very happy Valentine’s Day to you, and may it be full of love by design.
