Do you have a room you have been planning on making over? Consider yellow and grey for the color scheme – it is an amazingly cheerful color combination. Be forewarned, though, that there are a plethora of shades of grey, and it can be just as tricky to get the right shade of grey as it is an off-white. However, if you like what you see here, you are all set, as I have included my color palette below! Also, I have included my before and after shots of three individual sub-projects in the room – all of which were based on reused items to keep the cost small!
Found these beauties in an antique store in Astoria, Washington for $25 each. I actually bought four chairs, so if you have been following the blog, you might have already seen two of them made-over already, which are now residing beautifully in my dining room. These chairs were painted with Vintage Frame, Valspar Professional, Interior Eggshell, Neutral Base. After the paint dried, I lightly distressed the wood frame and then applied Minwax Special Walnut. May I just add, this is the penultimate stain – it doesn’t matter the project, this is my go-to stain!
This amazing mid-century dresser was found on craigslist. I fell in love with it, and although the hardware was tarnished badly, it wasn’t something a quick coat of metallic silver paint couldn’t fix. Believe it or not, I already had in my existing stash of miscellaneous antique treasures the two glass knobs to replace the missing ones. The paint was Tinman, Valspar Aspire, Interior Flat, Medium Base. After the paint dried, I distressed and stained just as the chairs were done above.
This is Where the Magic Happens
Can you believe that this charming cane bench was found at the Goodwill for just $7.99? What a fantastic find! I still adore this picture of the “love locks” I found in Europe.
I purchased all these fun geometric fabrics for this room from JoAnn’s Fabric Store, with the beaded silver pillow coming from Pier One. And what room is complete without some books lying about, some treasures from the sea, and a vase of fresh flowers.
Designing and decorating a beautiful space makes me happy! And this room with its splashes of yellow scattered among the shades of grey really put a smile on my face as it came together. And speaking along those lines, I found a perfect quote I adore:
If you wait until you have enough money to decorate and make your home your own, it will never happen. If you wait until you can afford to buy everything new, you are missing the point. It is the old, the new, the made, the hand-me-down, the collected, the worn (but loved) things in your home that make it your own.” -Stacy Risenmay
